Get rid of clutter
Clutter can present itself in many forms around the house starting from things on the kitchen benches, products on the side of the bathroom sink, pet beds or shoes on the hallway floor. It is generally a good idea to make sure all the surfaces including the floor are clear. You can stash everything in the cupboard for time being, hide sponges and dishwashing utensils in the dishwasher, remove anything stuck on the fridge door and give it a good polish.
Have a good look around your space and ask yourself, how does it feel? Does the furniture fit well in the room and flows easily so you can move around with ease? Is there too much furniture resulting in the room feeling smaller than it is? You can remove a few items and see how it feels. Rooms with less furniture give a more relaxed feel.
Personally, I would also recommend removing personal photos, not because they are clutter but simply to give the potential buyer an opportunity to create their own vision of themselves in the space.
Tidy your front door area and make it really welcoming
First impressions are made before you even enter the property and that's why how the entrance is presented matters. Make sure the lawn is mowed, and the weeds are removed, and any plants are in great thriving condition and any tools or gardening stuff put away. It is also a good idea to have a nice clean doormat to achieve a more polished entryway look. Don't forget to clean the front door and polish the glass if there is any.
Make sure the windows in view are clean
The windows play a huge role in the main living areas, especially if they overlook the garden or outdoor dining area. Give them a good clean so they don't look too grimy. Sometimes it is also better to keep them open during open homes if that's possible as it offers a clearer view.
Use lighting to enhance the atmosphere
Whenever there is natural light, keep it coming in. Open blinds and curtains to fill the space with light. When using indoor lighting make sure you have the right temperature, warm lights give a better cosier vibe. Turn on the table lamps and floor lamps to enhance the atmosphere in the space.
Highlight the existing features of the house
Do you know the main features of your home? What is there that makes it truly special? A fireplace? Large windows? Beautiful view? Maybe a piece of art? This must be the first thing people see when they walk in. If your home is free of clutter and unnecessary things the real gems will shine in their full glory.
Bring nature inside
You don't need to turn your place into a jungle, but a bit of greenery can really make a place feel more alive. A pot plant or a flower arrangement in a vase makes a house feel so much more lived in and homey and it adds a bit of colour as well.
